FAQ

Short answers about protocols, FileZilla errors, and what Filenilla will and will not do.

Is Filenilla official FileZilla support?

No. Filenilla is an independent educational resource and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the FileZilla project. The guides describe the FileZilla client. The software itself is published by the FileZilla project at filezilla-project.org.

What is the difference between FTP, FTPS, and SFTP?

FTP moves files and sends the password without encryption. FTPS is FTP with TLS, usually explicit on port 21. SFTP is a different protocol that runs over SSH, usually on port 22. SFTP is not FTP tunneled through SSH, and it does not use the FTP TLS settings. The setup guide shows a separate FileZilla site for each one.

Which port should I use?

Use the port your server operator documented. The usual defaults are 21 for FTP and for explicit FTPS, 990 for implicit FTPS, and 22 for SFTP. A correct password on the wrong port still fails, often before any login prompt.

Why does FileZilla say connection refused or connection timed out?

Connection refused means the TCP port did not accept a socket. Connection timed out means the handshake never finished. Neither one is a wrong password. Check the host, the protocol, and the port, then read the connection errors guide.

Why does authentication fail after the server has already greeted me?

A 220 greeting or an SSH banner means the port is open. The failure is then the username, the password, the logon type, or, for SFTP, the private key. FTP and SSH usernames on the same host are often different. See the authentication guide.

I am logged in, but the directory listing fails. Why?

On FTP and FTPS the file list uses a second connection. A blocked passive port, a private address in the 227 reply, or a TLS session that was not resumed will fail after 230 Login successful. SFTP does not use that second port. A failed SFTP listing is usually the remote path or permissions. The directory listing guide walks through both cases.

Should I turn off TLS or certificate checks to get online?

No. Those checks are how you know you reached the right server. If a certificate or SSH host key does not match, verify the fingerprint with the operator. If a data connection fails TLS session resumption, the passive ports need a correct server-side setup. Switching to plain FTP hides the fault and exposes the password.

Does the interactive troubleshooter test my server?

No. It runs in your browser and only uses the protocol and problem you select. It does not ask for a hostname, password, or private key, and it does not open a network connection. It suggests checks and links to the matching guide.

Will Filenilla log in to my server or send me software?

No. Filenilla does not offer remote administration, paid support, or its own installers. Install FileZilla only from the FileZilla project if you choose to use that client. Do not send account passwords or private keys through the contact form.

What should I include if I ask a question?

Include the protocol, the port, and the exact status or response line from FileZilla’s message log. Leave out passwords, private keys, and full account identifiers. A reply is not guaranteed, and there is no promised response time. You can also write directly to [email protected].

The FileZilla project site is filezilla-project.org. Questions for Filenilla go to the contact form or [email protected].
